Spooky Skeletons

Spooky Skeletons

Who doesn’t love a fun and spooky Halloween craft and writing activity? This activity is perfect to keep your kids engaged on Halloween day. You can even complete this before Halloween to get your kids in the spirit. Bonus: this activity is easily adaptable for any grade level!

Halloween Activity

Materials:

  • print out of the Dancing Skeleton worksheet from Super Teacher Worksheets (1 per child)

  • scissors

  • brass fasteners (4 per child)

  • coloring supplies

  • writing paper and pencils

Step 1: Decorate

Hand out the Dancing Skeleton worksheet to each child. Instruct students to color the skeleton’s parts using crayons, markers, or colored pencils. The more colorful and creative, the better!

For older students, you may want to encourage them to put their skeleton in a costume. For example, they may choose to decorate their skeleton like a soccer player, a famous singer, or an animal! This is a great time to encourage students to think outside the box.

Halloween Writing

Step 2: Assemble

Once the skeleton is decorated, it is time to assemble. Simply cut out the skeleton's body, arms, and legs using scissors.

Next, hand out 4 brass fasteners to each child. Instruct the kids to poke the brass fastener through the dot on one of the arms and through the dot on one of the shoulders. Then, spread out the two brackets on the fasteners to keep it in place. Follow these steps for the other arm and both legs.

Be prepared to help younger students with this tricky step. If you notice some students who are really good at handling the fasteners, you may wish to assign them as helpers for other students.

Step 3: Writing

After the dancing skeleton is assembled, pass out writing paper to each child. It’s time for them to complete a writing prompt to accompany their skeletons. Teachers, choose a prompt from below that is appropriate for your class, or create your own!

Post the prompt on the board for all students to see. Ask students to brainstorm a list of ideas or answers. Teachers may wish to write these on the board as well to help with spelling.

Kindergarten to First Grade

  • My skeleton’s name is __________. He/she is __________. (spooky, kind, silly)
  • My skeleton’s name is __________. He/she likes ______________. (Halloween, pumpkins, bats)

Second to Fifth Grade

  • Write a story about your skeleton going trick-or-treating on Halloween night. Be sure to include a beginning, middle, and end.
  • If your skeleton could do anything on Halloween night, what would it be and why? Be sure to include important details!

Your kids will love making these skeletons and writing about them! When you’re done, be sure to check out more Halloween activities on Super Teacher Worksheets by clicking here.
