Penguins are a fun animal to use for a winter-themed craft. Their waddle, snowy habitat, and playful nature make them a favorite among young learners! Plus, they’re easy to make with just a few simple supplies—and their handprint design adds a personal touch!
Engage students in learning about penguins using some fun articles from Super Teacher Worksheets. “Talking About Penguins” is an article geared toward learners from third to fifth grade. You could also read it aloud to younger students. For even younger learners, the story “Black and White Bird” is the perfect way to introduce penguins.
Step 1: Handprint Body
Start off with a black sheet of paper. Students will each trace one hand using a pencil. You may wish to have students help each other trace their hands. This is a great opportunity to talk about the importance of teamwork! Once the handprint is traced, cut it out using scissors. This handprint will serve as the body of the penguin.
Step 2: Penguin’s Belly
Have students draw or trace a circle on a piece of white construction paper and cut it out. This will be the penguin’s belly. Position the black handprint shape so the fingers are pointing down. Then glue the white circle onto the middle of the handprint. It is ok if some of the white covers the fingers.
Step 3: Eyes and Beak
Glue two googly eyes toward the top of the handprint. Cut out a small triangle from the orange piece of paper to serve as the beak. Glue it right below the eyes with one corner pointing downward.
Step 4: Bulletin Board
Now it’s time to use these unique penguins to make an adorable bulletin board! Trace and cut out some letters that read “Sliding into the New Year!” Use light blue paper on the top of the board and white paper on the bottom to create an icy background. Staple on the letters and the penguins. Fill in any blank spaces with some paper snowflakes or even some white pom poms. This board is sure to be a cute addition to the school hallway!
