It’s time to get in the holiday spirit! Whether or not you celebrate winter holidays, it is always nice to give and receive gifts. This activity will get your kids coloring, counting, and learning about the months, all while creating a special gift perfect for the upcoming new year!
This gift may take some time for your students to create. You may wish to set aside a large chunk of time or set aside a few minutes each day. After the initial introduction, it’s the perfect activity for morning work or a calming activity in the afternoon.
Materials:
monthly calendar printouts found here (one set of 12 for each student)
coloring supplies
hole punch and binder rings or binding machine
Step 1: Print out the Calendar
Take a look at STW’s calendar page. Scroll through different options for each month and print off the sheets that will best suit your students. Once you have these printed, make a copy of the set for each child.
Step 2: Fill out the Calendar
Display a copy of a January calendar for all students to see. Invite students to copy the dates onto their own calendars. If there are any special holidays, they should copy those as well. Additionally, if there are any birthdays in their family in that month, they should put those on the calendar!
If you have younger students, encourage them to practice their counting skills while filling in the dates. Be sure not to miss any numbers!
Step 3: Color!
Here’s the fun step! Grab your coloring supplies and get to work making the calendar page super colorful.
Step 4: Repeat!
Go ahead and repeat steps 2 and 3 for the rest of the months.
Step 5: Assemble the Calendar for Each Student
If you are using a binding machine, follow the machine directions to bind the top of the papers together.
If you don’t have a binding machine, grab a hole punch and some binder rings. Simply punch two holes evenly spread out at the top of each paper. Be sure the holes line up. Use the two binder rings to attach the papers together.
Now you have the perfect gift for your students to give to a loved one! The lucky recipient is sure to use this sweet gift each month!
Helpful Hints:
For younger students, you can pre-write the dates on all the calendar pages before making copies.
If your kids will be completing this over a long period of time, you might want to collect the papers from them to keep them safe. Or, each student can have a folder dedicated to this calendar craft.
