Are you looking for a fun way to incorporate Juneteenth into your classroom? Check out this craft that doubles as an informative activity about the Juneteenth flag and a decoration!
Materials:
printout of the Juneteenth flag from Super Teacher Worksheets (1 per child)
blue and red crayons, colored pencils, or markers
scissors
tape or glue
Step 1: Color the Flag
Discuss the colors of the Juneteenth flag with your students. You may even wish to display a color picture of the flag. Go ahead and grab it by clicking here!
The top half of the flag is blue, while the bottom half of the flag is red. The two stars in the center and the words on the right-hand side are white.
The flag uses the same colors as the American flag, and the stars in the middle are a bursting star of freedom. The arc running across the center of the flag symbolizes a new horizon of opportunity.
Have students color in the flag using blue and red crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
Step 2: Cut It Out
Cut out the rectangular flag. Then fold the flag in half horizontally.
Orient the flag so that the folded part is facing you. Keeping the flag folded, cut strips about ¾ of an inch apart. Do not cut all the way through the flag! Leave about an inch toward the end of the unfolded side. Make sure to cut around the words so that they can still be seen.
Step 3: Create the Windsock
Unfold the flag. Wrap the two shorter ends together to create a tube-like shape. With the date on the outside of the tube, secure the two ends together using either tape or glue. Press the two ends of the tube together gently and the paper will fold out, making the windsock!
Step 4: Hang it up!
Cut a strip of paper about a half an inch thick. Kids can even use part of the scraps from the border of the flag worksheet. Color the strip red, blue, or keep it white. Glue or tape the strip to the top of the windsock to create a handle.
Hang up these windsock creations in your classroom or have students bring their decorations home. This is a great way to celebrate this meaningful holiday!
